Built on Family, Strengthened by Community: James River Equipment Asheville
James River Equipment Asheville operates with local leadership, family-first values, and the resources of a large John Deere dealer—ensuring customers get fast decisions, trusted service, and long-term support. When Hurricane Helene impacted Western North Carolina, that approach proved why local authority and experienced teams matter. This is how our Asheville team supports customers today while investing in the region’s future.

What Makes James River Equipment Asheville Different?
At James River Equipment, being family-owned is more than a label—it drives how we serve customers and support our people. Nowhere is that more evident than at our Asheville, North Carolina location, where local decision-making and long-term relationships guide every move we make.
Our Asheville operation is led by General Manager Dan Metcalf, who has been part of the James River Equipment team since 2002. With more than two decades of experience, Dan has seen the company grow from roughly 300 employees to more than 1,700 across 50+ locations—without losing its local focus.
How Does Local Decision-Making Benefit Our Customers?
Even with the scale of one of the largest John Deere dealers in the region, operational authority stays local. That structure removes red tape and allows our teams to respond quickly when customers need answers.
“At James River Equipment, the big decisions stop at my desk here in Asheville—and that’s true at every location,” Metcalf explains.
For customers, that means:
- Faster approvals on service and support
- Direct access to local leadership
- Decisions made by people who understand the terrain, equipment, and workload
This approach combines the strength of a multi-location dealer with the trust and responsiveness of a community-based business.
How Did James River Equipment Respond to Hurricane Helene?
On September 27, Hurricane Helene caused widespread damage across Western North Carolina. Infrastructure, communication systems, and access to basic services were severely impacted—affecting both customers and our own team members.
In those first critical days, communication was limited, phone systems were down, and many employees were cut off from fuel, water, and power. That’s when our broader James River Equipment team mobilized.
Teams from Charlotte, Greensboro, Wilkesboro, and other locations organized supply caravans into Asheville, delivering:
- Drinking water
- Fuel and generators
- Food and essential supplies
“At first, we didn’t even know exactly what everyone needed,” Metcalf recalls. “We just knew we had to take care of our people.”
Why Supporting Employees Comes First
Our first priority was ensuring our Asheville employees and their families were safe and supported. Once that stability was established, we turned our attention to helping customers and the broader community recover.
That effort included:
- Coordinating equipment from Virginia, Eastern North Carolina, and other regions
- Deploying technicians from multiple locations to assist with cleanup
- Managing logistics, trucking, and customer communication while local phone lines were still down
Our technicians—many with years of hands-on John Deere experience—worked directly with customers to help clear debris, restore access, and begin rebuilding efforts.
How Is James River Equipment Investing in Asheville’s Future?
Even while recovery continues, our commitment to Western North Carolina remains long-term. The Asheville team is preparing for a major investment: a new James River Equipment facility in Mills River, scheduled to open in early 2026.
What the New Mills River Facility Will Deliver
- Approximately 2.5x the space of the current location
- Increased crane and lifting capacity for larger equipment
- Expanded ability to service larger construction and forestry machines
- A dedicated bulk parts storage building
This expanded parts footprint will allow us to stock more inventory locally—reducing machine downtime and improving turnaround times for customers working in demanding conditions.
Why Does This Investment Matter to Local Contractors and Farmers?
This expansion isn’t about growth for growth’s sake. It’s about making sure customers in Western North Carolina have access to the equipment, parts, and expertise they need—without delays.
The new facility will help us:
- Reduce wait times for parts
- Improve service efficiency
- Attract and retain skilled technicians
- Support customers as job sizes and machine complexity continue to grow
A Long-Term Commitment to Western North Carolina
The Mills River expansion reflects our ongoing commitment to Asheville, our employees, and the customers who rely on us every day.
“They’ve been so supportive of us,” Metcalf says. “We want to be here for a long time, and that’s why we’re making this investment.”
At James River Equipment, being family-owned means showing up—before, during, and after challenges arise.
