With more than two decades of experience, Dan has seen the company grow from roughly 300 employees to more than 1,700 across 50+ locations—without losing its local focus.

How Did James River Equipment Respond to Hurricane Helene? 

On September 27, Hurricane Helene caused widespread damage across Western North Carolina. Infrastructure, communication systems, and access to basic services were severely impacted—affecting both customers and our own team members. 

In those first critical days, communication was limited, phone systems were down, and many employees were cut off from fuel, water, and power. That’s when our broader James River Equipment team mobilized. 

Teams from Charlotte, Greensboro, Wilkesboro, and other locations organized supply caravans into Asheville, delivering: 

  • Drinking water 
  • Fuel and generators 
  • Food and essential supplies 

“At first, we didn’t even know exactly what everyone needed,” Metcalf recalls. “We just knew we had to take care of our people.” 

 

Why Supporting Employees Comes First 

Our first priority was ensuring our Asheville employees and their families were safe and supported. Once that stability was established, we turned our attention to helping customers and the broader community recover. 

That effort included: 

  • Coordinating equipment from Virginia, Eastern North Carolina, and other regions 
  • Deploying technicians from multiple locations to assist with cleanup 
  • Managing logistics, trucking, and customer communication while local phone lines were still down 

Our technicians—many with years of hands-on John Deere experience—worked directly with customers to help clear debris, restore access, and begin rebuilding efforts. 

 

How Is James River Equipment Investing in Asheville’s Future? 

Even while recovery continues, our commitment to Western North Carolina remains long-term. The Asheville team is preparing for a major investment: a new James River Equipment facility in Mills River, scheduled to open in early 2026. 

What the New Mills River Facility Will Deliver 

  • Approximately 2.5x the space of the current location 
  • Increased crane and lifting capacity for larger equipment 
  • Expanded ability to service larger construction and forestry machines 
  • dedicated bulk parts storage building 

This expanded parts footprint will allow us to stock more inventory locally—reducing machine downtime and improving turnaround times for customers working in demanding conditions.

This expansion isn’t about growth for growth’s sake. It’s about making sure customers in Western North Carolina have access to the equipment, parts, and expertise they need—without delays. 

The new facility will help us:

  • Support customers as job sizes and machine complexity continue to grow
