2012 Disability Awareness Project

James River partnered with over 25 businesses to host a two-day event allowing 44 wheelchair users and their families an opportunity to meet together at one location and share in a common interest – hunting.

Registration began Friday morning, followed by a lunch hosted by Tyson’s Creek Baptist Church in Bear Creek, NC. After lunch, the NC Wildlife Resource Commission taught a safety workshop, and then the families and their guides had an opportunity to get to know each other better with refreshments sponsored by NC Vocational Rehabilitation. After an afternoon hunt, the group reorganized at the recreation center for an evening of fun and food.

The community turned out and brought huge pots of soup, and our business partners provided over 150 door prizes. The Legends and Outlaws band played free of charge, and the evening concluded with overnight accommodations in Sanford, NC. Saturday morning came early, with Nascar personality Jeff Hammond joining us for breakfast prior to the day’s hunt. Our hunters and their families again enjoyed breakfast and the group had another successful hunt. By noon, 42 of the hunters had experienced an opportunity to shoot, many with adaptive devices purchased with the help of Back in the Woods Again nonprofit and Carolina Healthcare’s Adaptive Sports and Adventures Program. Jerome Davis, world champion bull rider, awarded top hunters with prizes and Robbie Parks, champion water skier, assisted with the event.

31 deer were harvested, but tons of good times were captured as hunters began to depart. The guides and businesses were blessed and everyone was already making plans for the next hunts. Hundreds of connections were made, and calls are already coming in wanting to know, “When can we do this again?”.

Several reporters were out interviewing and photographing the event, so there will be more news to come! James River was recognized as a leading partner for this event. The company name has been featured on this banner to be used annually.
